We mourn Argentina’s Special Prosecutor Alberto Nisman’s passing
We are deeply saddened and shocked by the death of Argentina’s Special Prosecutor Alberto Nisman, who tragically was found dead on January 18 with a gunshot wound to his head.
Prosecutor Nisman was in charge of the investigation of the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish Center. He was scheduled to testify on January 18 with details about his accusations against Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman, members of the Argentine Congress, and radical activists who are close to the Argentine government—all of whom Nisman had accused of a cover-up operation that would sanitize Iranian complicity in the AMIA terror attack that killed 85 and injured hundreds.
As noted in a Simon Wiesenthal Center press release, Nisman’s tragic death put us further away than ever before from truth and justice, both in the AMIA attack itself as well as in his last denunciation. The Wiesenthal Center also demanded that an alleged cover up by the Argentine government must be investigated till the end.
An independent investigation about the circumstances around Prosecutor Nisman’s death has also been demanded.
