For Russians, the defeat of Nazi Germany was “the Great Patriotic War” that defended their homeland. It was the bloodiest disaster ever to befall the Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian people. The Soviet Union lost over 26 million people. The next highest total loss of life was Germany at about 6.5 million. Every other country lost less lives except China, which suffered terribly under Japanese occupation. The local Jewish-Russian community and others will celebrate Victory Day on May 3 at the JCC from 6:00 – 8:00 PM with a ceremony, dinner, and a special concert featuring Arkadiy Gips and friends.
