Making a Positive Impact for Athletes of All Ages
Randy Kohn and Billy Barkan both spent a great deal of time playing sports at the JCC. Basketball was their favorite. Sadly, both of these vital young men passed away much before their time. To honor their memories and keep their spirits alive, special funds were set up at the Columbus Jewish Foundation by their loved ones.
When the JCC expanded, there was no question who its new indoor basket-ball court would be named for. The JCC’s new Randy Kohn Memorial Basket-ball Court brings back happy memories of Randy and his buddies shooting hoops at their favorite hangout. The court accommodates players of all ages.
Billy Barkan was equally passionate about sports, both as a player and a fan. Recognizing his special committment to kids, his friends and family host the William A. Barkan Memorial High School Basketball shootout each year at the JCC. The event allows high school teams to participate at no cost with the hope that opening doors to many youth who otherwise would not have the opportunity to play. Over the past 15 years, enough money has been raised to construct the outdoor sports court in Billy’s honor. It is well used by the JCC Summer camp and after school
programs, and is open to JCC members of all ages.
